In China, the cherry blossom is a symbol of feminine beauty. It has also come to represent the feminine principle and love. In Japan the meaning is some what different, cherry blossoms symbolize the impermanence of life. This is immediately obvious to anyone who has been in Japan in Cherry blossom season. The cherry blossom season is a short one but while it lasts there is an amazing burst of color and life.
The Japanese are predominantly Buddhist in their beliefs. Although you wouldn't think this is you were strolling around Shinjuku in Tokyo. Its only when you get outside the cities do you get a glimpse of the traditional Japan. Here the pace is slower and in many ways the people have held onto their beliefs. One of the main tenets of Buddhism is the impermanence of life and the need to let go of all attachment.
The cherry blossom symbolizes this belief perfectly. Its beauty only lasts a short time but the following year it is 'reborn' and blooms once again. The tree itself does not try to cling onto the leaves. When it is time to go even the slightest breeze will make them fall. It reminds us also of the beauty of aging and death.
